Our centre is a 3 way project between Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Leicestershire County Council and the DCSF. We are part of a larger national DCSF strategy called Playing for Success which takes place in sporting venues around the country. In total there are around 150 PfS centres in venues as diverse as Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre Cornwall, Arsenal FC, Nottingham Ice Arena and Aintree Racecourse.

The aim of Playing for Success is to reach out to pupils who are in need of a boost with their literacy, numeracy and ICT and to use fun and up to date teaching methods to boost children’s confidence and self esteem. The work takes place after school and each group of 15 students attends our centre for a couple of hours once a week for a total of 10 weeks. Schools are approached and asked to select students who may be underachieving for their ability. The students are usually in years 5-8. For more information about Playing for Success visit www.dcsf.gov.uk/playingforsuccess

All of the sessions are led by a qualified teacher and we have experienced and trained volunteers to help out called Study Coaches who play a teaching assistant role. The staff to student ratio is usually very high with around 1 adult to 3 children. Our staff are experts in accelerated learning techniques and we try to develop our learners’ awareness of their own learning styles. The young people who benefit the most from our programme are the pupils who lack self esteem and seem skilled at making themselves invisible.
We monitor our programme, and we can demonstrate success with improving pupil attendance, achievement and attitudes. National evaluations of PfS have consistently found that pupils make significant and substantial progress in numeracy, reading and comprehension in addition to attitudinal improvements and all round skills.
