Here are a few testimonials from experienced Study Coaches:
“I first heard of the GREAT Learning Centre during a lecture at university. The centre manager visited us and talked us through the work that she does and asked for volunteers. I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to work with year 6 children in a different setting rather than just getting in-school work experience as I am working towards my desired career in teaching. I have been coming to the centre for over 2 years now and it has been great fun. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some extremely bright and talented young people and I would recommend working at the centre to anyone who wants to work with children.” – Nadine, Study Coach for 2 years.
“I have been a study coach at the GREAT Learning Centre for nearly 3 years. I started in my first term at De Montfort and I have been here ever since. My course is not in education like a lot of the volunteers, but I still have found my time here invaluable. I have met some lovely people and had some interesting times. Working with the kids has been a brilliant experience and I would recommend it to anybody with some spare time. The centre is a very friendly and welcoming place and all the staff are excellent at what they do. “ – Hollie, Study Coach for 3 years.
"I have only been volunteering at GREAT since the start of the year, but already feel that the work that goes on there has exceeded my expectations. The Learning Centre provides such a happy environment for children to learn and we tackle behaviour issues with a calm relaxed attitude so that children soon realise that it is different to learning in the classroom. Also, the emphasis on encouraging the children to choose to learn, rather than being forced, changes their attitude to studying. For example, by identifying what type of learner they are (kinaesthetic, visual or auditory) it helps children to understand why they enjoy certain lessons more than others. The main reason that I started to volunteer at GREAT was because I wanted to gain experience working with the age groups that they have there, as my current work involves university students. However, I now feel that my voluntary work is even more important as it is helping children to enjoy learning, which is vital for their future and will help them to make informed decisions about career choices in the years to come". – Beth, new Study Coach
