The GREAT Learning Centre is a fun and informal classroom that is based in the grounds of Leicestershire County Cricket Club just off Aylestone Road in Leicester. We are part of a wider, national project called Playing for Success which uses the world of sport to motivate young learners. There are Playing for Success centres all around the country in venues as diverse as Arsenal FC and Aintree Racecourse.

Our centre works with schools in Leicestershire to raise the standard of learning in numeracy, literacy and ICT (computers.)In particular we work with children who may be underconfident or who are underachieving for their ability. If your child is selected, it does not mean that they have special needs, or that they are naughty or lazy. It just means that they would benefit from a little extra input, and that they are likely to really enjoy and respond to this. We have a range of pupils here and some are very bright indeed. We give children challenges that are exciting, fun and aimed at capturing their considerable imaginations. We try to make children aware of how they learn best and we play games that develop teamwork and confidence. Research shows that children who attend Playing for Success do better than they would have otherwise in academic attainment, attitude to school and attendance at school. Our sessions are led by a qualified teacher and we have lots of staff so there is usually 1 adult to every 3 pupils. Here are some quotes from parents whose children have attended GREAT:

“My son really enjoys coming. He gets a lot out of it. He has learnt more about computers and he is more confident about using them.”

“GREAT is an excellent chance for children to gain confidence in developing skills that will help them in future years. They also have fun and gain confidence with each other, children and adults alike.”

“I am impressed with the centre. The staff are friendly and helpful. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to improve their skills.”
