Great Information..
The GREAT Learning Centre is now in it’s 7th year. It is part of the national Department for Children Schools and Families’ strategy ‘Playing for Success’ (PfS) which takes place in sporting venues around the country. PfS started with just 3 centres in 1997 and since then it has grown rapidly. Today we have 162 centres open nation wide covering 16 different sports. The centres are in venues as diverse as Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre Cornwall, Arsenal FC, Nottingham Ice Arena and Aintree Racecourse.Playing for success has, over the last 10 years become synonymous with quality and innovative teaching and learning. PfS centres are at the cutting edge of study support and educational practices. This is reflected in the growing number of centres that have achieved Quality in Study Support (QiSS) recognition. QiSS is a quality stamp which covers all aspects of centre management including curriculum, getting the best from staff, measuring the difference and involving young people.
The GREAT Learning Centre has QiSS recognition at Advanced (the highest) status and we are very proud of this achievement. We are also proud of the fact that we have achieved ‘Approved Provider’ status from the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation which means that we have been recognised as an excellent place to volunteer. In addition, centres are increasingly forming part of the Extended School services offered by local authorities, and Playing for Success continues to contribute to each of the 5 outcomes for young people identified in Every Child Matters.
At GREAT we believe in personalised learning; treating each child as an individual and tailoring the work accordingly. In addition to personalised learning plans, children and young people are given choice in many aspects of curriculum and the centre in general.
